Get Racing September 2015

The sunshine and prospect of a decent breeze on Sunday 6 September brought a good number of members to the club for the Get Racing sessions. The wind however was slow to turn up, and after a briefing ashore of the course to be sailed, most were not able to get to the far side of the lake for the scheduled start. With good co-operation of the club ODs, Start 7 was delayed until all 16 boats and 21 sailors had arrived at the start area.

The fleet soon spread out after the start as there was a big range in class of boat from an Optimist to an RS500 and a mix of both adults and juniors. The wind had settled around 6knots but with a north westerly direction those heading to the northern shore experienced both reduced wind and a lot more shifts. The two standard rig Lasers and the RS500 reached the windward mark first with the 2000 rounding next. There was a good battle throughout the race between the 3 Laser 4.7s with the RS200 pulling through them well. The leading bunch, including one of the Fevas, sailed two laps, all others finishing after one lap. There was a tight contest between the Teras and all boats had a competitive race on the water.

Average lap calculations revealed some very close results throughout the fleet with the Lasers of Guy Jewkes and Adrian Roberts finishing first and second followed by the RS 500 of Nigel and Aaron Davis in third. It was noticeable that all sailed very well and that there has been a big improvement over the season. Special mention should be made of relative newcomers Rory Stewart finshing 5th in his Tera and sister Mary in 11th despite falling out of her boat at the last mark. Oscar George had a great first session sailing his Tera into 12th place on corrected time.

A depleted fleet of 5 boats set off for the second race, after much debate as to where the course would be to avoid the huge Oppy course. The wind had increased to around 8kts and the ODs set another great course with a rare trip into Toft Bay for a rounding of Mark G. Guy Jewkes changed to a 4.7 rig but still had a close race on the water with the RS500 and won the race both on the water and on handicap. The 2000 sailed by Andea Toniutti and Eduardo Moran had a better race in the stronger breeze finishing second on handicap. An altercation between the Davis boats near the start line resulted in Josh taking a swim in his Laser 4.7 but he recovered well to finish third on handicap.

The next Get Racing date is Sunday 4 October. In the meantime get some practice in and join in with normal fleet racing on Sundays and in particular remember that the second Barts Bash is on Sunday 20 September so come along and join in the fun and note that as part of this event:-

  • the Tom Pearson Trophy will be awarded (courtesy of the Miracle fleet) for the highest placed novice helm who has participated in Get Racing this year.
  • Club boats available for hire for free (recommended to book in advance).
