Junior Sailing Courses

Junior Sailing courses at Draycote Water are a fun and exciting way to get into sailing. Our enthusiastic and very skilled instructors run these courses in a safe and professional manor while still ensuring the students have fun along the way.

Who this course is for

Our junior sailing courses are suitable for complete beginners with no previous experience through to those learning advanced techniques.

Children must be aged 8 – 15 (those aged 16+ will be better suited to our adult courses).

Club membership is not needed.

Course stages

Stage 1

3 day course

Introduction course to gain confidence and learn basics of boat controls

Stage 1 & 2

5 day course

Learn to sail in good conditions with the aim of independent sailing

Stage 3

5 day course

Learn intermediate and more technical skills in stronger winds

Stage 4

5 day course

Introduction to sailing with a crew in more powerful, double handed boats

Staff and safety

  • Buoyancy aids, wet suits & helmets provided
  • All staff have relevant qualifications (Safety & rescue training, first aid, DBS)
  • Small group sizes and staff ratios
  • Swimming skills not needed but must be water confident

What kit is required

You need to bring:
  • Swimwear for underneath the wetsuit
  • Suitable shoes (e.g. trainers)
  • Towel
  • Lunch
  • £1 for lockers (returnable) 
We will provide:
  • Wetsuit
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Helmet
  • RYA Logbook
  • RYA Certificate upon successful completion

After your course

Once you have learnt your sailing skills, we’re sure you’ll want to put them in to practice. We run weekly Youth and Junior groups on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.

These groups are for Club members and we know that signing up to a year’s membership is a big commitment so we offer a trial 3 Month Membership for you try these groups and hire boats. This offer is exclusive to people who have completed our full courses and your instructor will give you details at the end of your course.

Unsure if a full course is best?

Taster Sessions

A great mini-session where the instructor will be in the boat with you and you’ll be able to help with the boat controls to get a feel for the fun of sailing.

Our 2 hour Taster Sessions are also strongly recommended for you to try sailing before committing to a course.

Refresher Days

If your child has done a course before but not sailed for some time, then a refresher day will help to practice skills but joining another full course.

Our Refresher Days recap all the essential sailing skills to bring you back up to speed to start sailing again.
