Solos

The Solo fleet at Draycote is one of the longest-established fleets at Draycote, and remains popular, active and highly competitive.

We have club racing every Sunday throughout the season which is supplemented by a healthy mid-week turnout where sailors of all abilities spend many happy hours honing their skills through informal one-lap races and some quality bimbling over sandwich box lunches.

Draycote’s Solo Fleet hosts full-scale national events, in conjunction with the National Solo Association, and the last couple of years have seen superb racing at the highest level at the National Solo Spring Championship.

To have stood the test of over 60 years’ time and still be one of the most popular single-handers around, the National Solo has to be nothing short of a design classic.  Whether you’re new to dinghy sailing, or an established sailor thinking of giving this classic a try, come along and talk to this friendly, generous fleet on a Sunday.  We have a fleet boat for you to try out – it’s easy to rig, and with advice always to hand, you can be on the water in minutes.

SEASONAL SERIES

There are 4 seasonal series as follows:

  • Winter Series (consisting of 1st & 2nd Sunday races over Club winter start times)
  • Summer Race 1 Series (Sunday morning race over Club summer start times)
  • Summer Race 2 Series (Sunday first afternoon race over Club summer start times)
  • Wednesday Evening Series

The Draycote Dash races will not count towards the series in which they occur, but the races held as part of the Fleet Championships will.

For each of these series the number of races to count towards each boat’s series score will be a third of the total number of races scored (defined in Rule 90.3 (a)* – basically if at least one boat finishes). If necessary this will be rounded down to the nearest whole number.

Additionally the Summer Sunday morning race has a handicapped scoring system, based on the length of the race and an individual’s handicap. The handicap of the winner and loser of each race is adjusted to try to ensure no one inadvertently wins a series through an advantageous handicap.

FLEET CHAMPIONSHIPS

These will be held over two Sundays and consist of up to 4 races.

  • If 4 races are scored, 3 races will count towards the series scores.
  • If 3 races are scored, 2 races will count towards the series scores.
  • If 1 or 2 races are sailed, all will count towards the series scores.

SCORING

The scoring for all these series will be as follows:

  • Solo Sunday races take place as part of the club Slow Handicap** starts, however, the Solo Fleet is additionally scored independently as a fleet in its own right, in race order rather than average lap racing. As a consequence, from time to time the fleet may be split when the OD shortens the race which means, for example, some boats may sail 3 laps and others 2. In this case the overall finishing order is the order of the 3 lap boats followed by the order of the 2 lap boats.
  • The Low Point System will be used (points = to finishing place).
  • As Appendix A9*: “a boat that came to the starting area but did not start, did not finish, retired after finishing or was disqualified shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats that came to the starting area. A boat that did not come to the starting area shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats entered in the series.”
  • For the handicap scoring if you don’t finish you don’t score due to the need for a finishing time.
  • When there is a requirement to do so, boats that do not sign on or off will be treated as DNC (did not compete).
  • If there is a series-score tie between two or more boats, Appendix A8.1* as amended here will be used to separate them: “each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s)”. Appendix A8.1* is amended to include all races in the series – no scores will be excluded.
  • If a tie remains between two or more boats, Appendix A8.2* will be used to separate them: “they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next to last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.”
