Fisheries Incident and Water Safety

On Thursday afternoon, 29th May, we were alerted to two anglers having fallen in to the water from their boat. One, a 13 year old boy, was recovered by other fishermen and brought to shore. The other person, the boy’s father, was unfortunately missing.

DWSC staff went to the area looking for him, and emergency services were also soon in attendance.

The police made the decision to close the entire Draycote Water site as they, and other services, searched for the man. DWSC staff continued assisting in the search on Friday as well, and the police used our clubhouse as a base to co-ordinate the search and investigation.

Sadly, the man’s body was recovered from the water by specialist services late on Friday evening.

The circumstances surrounding this tragic event will be looked into by the necessary authorities, and this incident serves as a timely reminder to us all of the importance of water safety and weather awareness:

Safety Gear Guidance

The RYA guidance gives clarification on the safety gear that needs to be worn on different boats / boards, and for wingsurfing and foiling craft, and is summed up in the table below.

An information table for safety gear to be worn
* Wet suits, dry suits and waist / seat harnesses alone are not deemed to be a personal flotation device.

Suitable Weather Conditions

We recognise that different water sports and individual people’s abilities suit a variety of weather conditions. Each person should use their judgement and experience to determine what is suitable for themselves, and not to go out on the water in weather conditions beyond their ability.

However, DWSC staff/bosun may make a decision on occasion that overrules your personal choice, and their decision is final.

Club Regulations regarding Use Of The Water

The above points regarding personal safety gear and weather conditions are fully explained in our Club Regulations in section 18 (and some other clauses elsewhere).
