Powerboat Course

The RYA Powerboat level 1 and 2 course is run over 2 days and our fleet of powerboats offer a perfect opportunity to learn new skills and gain experience in a range of craft.

What you'll learn

  • Use and handling of tiller and console (steering wheel) RIBs
  • Launching and recovery
  • Boat handling
  • Securing to a buoy
  • Anchoring
  • Leaving and coming alongside
  • Man overboard
  • Coastal aspects (tides, buoyage)
  • Planing manoeuvres

There is no exam, passing is based on continual assessment by the instructor.

You will receive a RYA Start Powerboating book which covers the full course content.  Plus, a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

Who can take the course

For complete beginners or those needing a formal qualification:

  • People wanting to charter powerboats
  • Volunteers wanting to help at clubs and events
  • Instructors or safety boat drivers

Minimum age 12 years (under 16s need a parent on the course).

Club membership is not needed.

ICC

(International Certificate of Competency)

An ICC is usually the requirement for operating or hiring powerboats outside the UK and is issued by the RYA (their fees may apply).

The RYA website has lots of information for requirements in different countries.

To get an ICC, you will need to:

  • Apply via an online form on the RYA website
  • Submit the PB2 photo licence you’ve gained from your course
  • Submit other documents e.g. passport

Direct Assessment

The Direct Assessment is a fast track for an experienced Powerboater to get their  Powerboat level 2 qualification, without the need to attend the full 2 day course.

This is usually run over 2.5 – 3 hours where the student is asked to perform various manoeuvres and answer questions on safety and coastal topics to the standard taught in a level 2 course.
