Summer Race Series Briefing 2026

by Simon Odling

Welcome to another DWSC race briefing. Heading into Summer race there are a few changes upcoming that our racing members should be aware of, these are outlined below. As always if anything is unclear, please ask.

The Sunday series starts on the 29th March, this is the morning after the clocks change – don’t forget! Wednesday evenings start on the 1st April at 6:30pm.

I look forward to seeing you all on the water this summer!

Updates to OD Instructions

The main feedback from all fleets is that our OD’s should be encouraged to follow the manual and ask for advice more. Please, please, please read the OD manual before going afloat. Generally it is the most experienced club members who make the most errors!

1. The OD Manual has been generally updated with more information on setting the first beat and the start sequence timing.

2. Remember the timings are always “not before” so it is fine to delay a few mins to allow the wind to settle, or boats to arrive. And in the afternoon on Sundays you do not have to rush to start bang on 1:15pm – just talk to the fleets in the wet bar about starting a little later if the morning race is longer.

3. Please read the section on race length – Target race lengths are for all fleets – ie 60mins on a Sunday for the later starts – there is guidance in the OD manual on this. If you stop at around 60mins on the stopwatch some people only get a 40minute race.

I hope the updates are helpful for everyone.

Start Sequence & Schedule

Please review the schedule for both Sundays and Wednesday evenings. The start order for Sunday morning and afternoon racing has remained the same as winter – but with one crucial change.
The GL split point between fast and slow fleets has changed to 1025.

This summer we are running a changed Wednesday evening based on participation data and keeping the Fast/Slow fleet split. Don’t forget the first 2 weeks start 30minutes early!

On Sunday mornings if the 1st race is delayed and does not start before 12pm it will be automatically cancelled, and the afternoon race may be sailed as planned.

Super Sundays!

On 3 Sundays this summer we will run a slightly different format of racing

10:30am – Mass Start, 1 lap Practice race

11:00am – Sunday 1st Race

1:15pm – Sunday Afternoon Specials

It will be up to the OD based on conditions what to run in the afternoon, They will brief sailors over Lunchtime (and via social media during the week before) what the plan is.

On the 5th April the Larr’s are planning to run 3 sprint races back to back in the afternoon, the first race will count towards the main series.

We hope to encourage a few more than usual to stay on for some quick and fun racing on these days.
