Draycote Water Sailing Club is celebrating having secured £50,000 of Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.
The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympics Games into communities across the country.
Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.
The aim of the project at Draycote Water Sailing Club is to create two dedicated training rooms and install solar PV panels to reduce the club’s utilities expenditure and carbon emissions. The changing facilities will also be refurbished to modern standards as they date back to when the clubhouse was built in 1971.
Draycote Water Sailing Club commodore Phillip Hunt said: “We are delighted to secure this Inspired Facilities grant. This funding with Draycote Water Sailing Club’s contribution will enable us to upgrade the quality of our premises to be enjoyed by members and visitors alike.
“An attractive and spacious clubhouse is an essential part of our long term development strategy to attract more people into the great sport of sailing. This grant will provide a fantastic legacy from the 2012 London Olympics.”
Draycote Water Sailing Club is one of many local community sports groups to have been offered Olympic legacy funding through the Inspired Facilities Fund.
Sport England has announced a further £10 million funding round to help local community sports groups upgrade their facilities, with bids being accepted from July 23, 2012, and further information is available at www.sportengland.org/
Sport England chair Richard Lewis said: “For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”
Places People Play is being delivered by Sport England working in partnership with the British Olympic Association and the British Paralympic Association, with the backing of the London Olympics organisational body LOCOG and the London 2012 Inspire mark.
LOCOG chair Seb Coe said: “This is a fantastic funding project that will deliver a real legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games. It will provide a whole range of sporting opportunities for young people through improved facilities and will I hope inspire them to take up sport.”
